FEATURED STORY | Treats for Troops

In early 2011, PMI Nutrition® and Champion Feed and Pet Supply in Dublin, Ohio made a donation to support military professionals and "all" members of their family. The donation consisted of 2,400 bags of PMI Nutrition® Happy Hound® Biscuits delivered to the Army Navy Garrison of Columbus as a gift of thanks for the military professionals, but mostly for their pets!

PMI Nutrition and Champion Feed and Pet Supply are proud to support the troops and all members of their families.

"Champion Feed and Pet Supply, in cooperation with PMI Nutrition®, felt that it was important to show our support for the efforts of service men and women at the local level, as well as members of their 'extended' families," said Derek Fauber, manager at Champion Feed and Pet Supply.

The Army and Navy Union of the United States of America, which is in association with the Garrison in Columbus, is the oldest veteran's organization in the United States. It unites all veterans in the effort to aid soldiers and sailors coming home from wars in readjusting to civilian life. It is the only American veterans' organization in which membership is not limited to any specific form, or branch, place or nature of the military service rendered, nor is membership restricted by considerations of racial origin or religious creed.

"We certainly recognize and understand the important roles that four-legged companions play in the lives of those who sacrifice so that we may enjoy the freedoms and liberties that we do," Derek said. "Everyone at the Garrison was very appreciative. There were lots of dogs, with lots of excited tails wagging!"

Champion Feed and Pet Supply, a part of Heritage Cooperative located in West Central Ohio, celebrated its Grand Opening on November 6, 2010. Though a fairly new store, they're already building the tradition of community service. Over the past year and a half, they have participated in the Purina® Pink 50 campaign for breast cancer research, a Harvest Food Drive benefiting the Franklin County Food Pantry, Fueling the Cure and work with the 4-H youth in the area.

Champion Feed and Pet Supply is a full line supplier of PMI Nutrition® including Exclusive®, Red Flannel®, Infinia® and Happy Hound® products. Happy Hound® Biscuits are designed as a snack or treat for dogs of all ages to be fed in conjunction with your dog's regular diet. These dog biscuits can be fed as a snack between meals or as reward during training. Their crunchy texture helps to maintain clean teeth and fresh breath. Treats are available in Large Golden Biscuits, Medium Multi-Flavor Biscuits, Medium Biscuits with Peanut Butter and Small Puppy/Training Biscuits.

PET TIPS | Is Your Dog (Ahem)...Fragrant?

We have all experienced the distinct aromatic result of canine flatulence (excessive formation of gases in the stomach or intestine), and who hasn't conveniently blamed their dog for their own inappropriate moment? Despite the humorous overtones of the situation, excessive flatus (the proper term for the expelled gas) can be a problem for some dogs.

What causes flatus? The production of gas is surprisingly complex, but the majority of malodorous gases are formed by bacterial fermentation of some foods in the dog's colon. Poorly digestible feeds are good substrates for gas production in general, and foods with large amounts of non-absorbable oligosaccharides (complex sugars), fermentable fiber, or sulfates (think rotten egg smell) are prime gas producers. Legumes (soybeans, peas, and beans) and sulfur-containing foods (onions, nuts, spices, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli) are often associated with frequent and fragrant flatus.

The good news is excessive flatulence can usually be reduced through dietary management. Studies published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research suggest that eliminating legumes (such as soybean meal) and making rice the primary source of carbohydrate can greatly reduce flatulence in both dogs and cats. Also avoid vegetable-based foods with sulfur-containing ingredients. Figure 1 shows the production of breath hydrogen in dogs on several different dietary regimens. Since hydrogen can be produced in the body only by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates, it is a good indicator of intestinal gas production. Note that rice-containing feeds produce little to no gas.

Dogs with flatus problems are good candidates for Exclusive® and Infinia® products. All Exclusive® and Infinia® pet foods are soy-free and wheat-free (and Infinia® foods have no corn products as well) and use healthful brown rice for optimal digestion. In addition, Exclusive® and Infinia® foods contain chicory root (a natural "prebiotic" to encourage beneficial gut microbial activity) and dried fermentation products, which contain actual beneficial microorganisms which help to optimize digestion.

Neither you nor your dog need be aromatic victims. The right food can go a long way to having you and your pet breathing easy again!
